Espresso Kentucky Coffee Tree

Espresso Kentucky Coffee Tree

Espresso Kentucky Coffee Tree (Gymnocladus dioicus ‘Espresso-JFS’)

A mature Kentucky Coffee Tree is magnificent.  This tree can handle the worst stresses nature and humanity can impose, yet it isn’t very common in the landscape.  The ‘Espresso’ is a male cultivar, making it fruitless.  It has doubly compound, green leaves that aren’t as small as locust leaves, but not as large as many shade trees.

Mature Height: 40′-50′

Mature Spread: 30′-35′

Zone: 4

Sunlight: Full sun

Soil Preference: Tolerant to a wide variety of soils, can handle dry or poor soils.

Nurseryman’s Notes: A native cultivar, with fine, doubly compound green leaves.  Moderate to slower growth rate (12″+ per year) with yellow fall color. Few pest or disease problems and tolerant of tough planting sites.  The filtered sunlight this variety offers is great for areas you’d like to plant with partial shade loving plants or garden areas you’d like to give a break from direct sunlight.  The finer textured leaves make for easier clean-up in the fall!
