Canada Red Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana ‘Canada Red’)

This small tree is one of the first to leaf out in spring.  The new leaves are a combination of bright to bronzy greens, and they mature to a deep purple soon after.  Autumn foliage color is usually a red to purplish red.  The flowers are arranged in clusters that droop and are fragrant.  Small, black fruit ripens in July and August, which wildlife enjoy.

Soil Preference: Tolerant to a wide variety of soils, high pH and clay soils

Nurseryman’s Notes: Leaves emerge green, and turn purple soon after and persist this way until fall.  The mature shape of this tree is rounded to spreading.  Flowers are small and white, in long clusters and fragrant!  Fall color is red to reddish purple.  Faster growing ornamental, tolerant of most soil conditions.  Does not like to be too wet.
